Astrodymium Ring System - V1.1 Update

All orders that ship from July 6th 2021 and later will be version 1.1 (or above).

This update addresses some issues that I found when making the first set of units for batch #1. These issues are mostly minor and related to fit and finish. However, some extra functionality was also added too.

OTA Rings:

The largest change in this update is that the mounting point on the thumbscrew side of the rings was removed. These mounting points couldn't be used and were redundant. It was not possible to attach anything to them without it colliding with the thumbscrews

However, the time saved on not having to install these mounting points will instead go towards having synthetic grease applied on all hinges. This grease reduces friction, which results in smoother motion when opening or closing the rings.

Other fixes & changes:

  • Installation of heat set inserts would cause bulging on one side of the rings. Introducing hollow cavities where the bulging would occur has reduced this problem significantly.
  • Installation of heat set inserts would cause a small horizontal expansion of the front-top ring. The removal of the extraneous mounting point reduces this to a non-issue.
  • The M6 through-holes on each mounting point were slightly undersized, causing screws to catch on the plastic that partially covers the insert. Increasing the diameter by just 0.20mm solves this.
  • Version number is now debossed onto each ring.

Guidescope Rail:

The second major change is to the rail that goes on top of the rings.

  • It's now called a guidescope rail, and is elevated several millimeters higher on each side. This makes it act like a handle, and results in manual focusing becoming more comfortable due to the extra clearance.
  • The holes are now slotted to make installation easier and more tolerant of misalignment.
  • Revision number and material type are debossed onto the underside of the rail.

For customers that purchased an additional rail: that extra rail will be flat, and not elevated. But the rail that goes on top of the rings will still be elevated as shown below.
